History
Lawn bowling has ancient roots dating back to Egypt and evolved into a structured sport in the UK by the 13th century. The Langley Lawn Bowling Club carries forward this legacy with a strong local presence in British Columbia.
Lawn bowling originated in ancient Egypt, where biased stone bowls were used in early games. The sport gained popularity in medieval England and Scotland, with formal rules established by the Scottish Bowling Association in the late 19th century. Played on flat greens with asymmetrical bowls aimed at a small target called the jack, lawn bowling became a staple of British leisure culture and spread globally through colonial influence. Its enduring appeal lies in its blend of strategy, precision, and social engagement.
In Canada, lawn bowling clubs began forming in the early 20th century, often as community hubs. The Langley Lawn Bowling Club, located in Langley, BC, has been a vibrant part of the Fraser Valley’s sporting landscape. Hosting events like mixed pairs tournaments, summer leagues, and holiday-themed matches, the club fosters camaraderie and competition among members of all ages. With its royal blue uniforms and welcoming atmosphere, Langley LBC continues to promote the sport’s traditions while adapting to modern community needs.
